Scanning Socials & Fred Perry Scanning Booths
Working with Fred Perry within the constraints of lockdown, we were able to develop x3 DIY Scanning booths inviting the public to bring a photograph in store and scan directly into the auto-feed scanner and bespoke touch screen interface. These were rolled out in the Fred Perry Camden, London; Covent Garden, London; and Nottingham stores.

Due to the pandemic the remaining stores were closed before we were able to roll out any further scanning booths, however Fred Perry were happy to cover all costs minus our time involving R&D and build of the machine. We plan on building and rolling out scanning booths in all of Fred Perry's 13 stores in 2021.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions we were able to divert our physical plans for scanning socials towards online activities in collaboration with digital agency Reload. Our most successful campaign yet, we asked the public 'what was it like growing up?' and 'become part of a museum', 'show us your youth culture'. As a result of the campaign we received over 4229 signups to our public submissions mailer, and received over 2269 photographic submissions.

We were amazed to see how many more submissions we received running scanning socials as an online marketing campaign in comparison to previous physical scanning events.

However in spite of lockdown, we were still able to conduct x2 physical Scanning Socials in collaboration with BOLT Film Screenings at Roadhouse London Colney AL2 1DQ on 16th August 2020 and BOLT Royal Docks, London E16 1YZ, UK on 29th October 2020.

This was a great learning curve for us as we were able to innovate on our traditional scanning socials setup in a COVID safe format. We wore masks, gloves, and ensured everyone submitting used sanitiser and kept at a 1.5m distance. We would open the scanner for the person submitting so only they handle their photograph, and then sanitise the scanner bed upon completion. This is a method we will continue as tiers begin to loosen.

Both events were geared towards the Rockabilly & Biker crowd, were fully socially distanced and oriented around outdoor screenings in order to keep the general public safe. It was brilliant to have the opportunity to carry out at least a few physical events, and get the chance to engage with the public in conversation during such a difficult year for 1 on 1 contact. Carrying out socially distanced sessions helped us pilot a sanitised form of scanning socials and this is something we will certainly continue to carry out beyond the scope of the project when we are able.

Example of fully realised ‘DIY Scanning Booth’ currently in Fred Perry Camden, Covent Garden, and Nottingham stores.
