LGBTQ+ & BAME Oral Histories
As part of our Outreach Champion programme, the project saw 61 Oral Histories recorded, generating a total of 67 hours of audio content, spearheading the Museum of Youth Culture's Oral History collections. All Oral Histories tell evocative stories of LGBTQ+, BAME stories of growing up, from the queer Bhangra scene DJ Ritu and the secrecy of clubbing coming from an Indian family, to the experience of attending Rock Against Racism rock gigs in the 1980s, the stories are an incredibly rich resource now fully available in our dedicated Outreach Champions section in the online Museum of Youth Culture.

As a legacy of the project have also set up a Grown Up in Britain Freephone Hotline (0800 009 6706) encouraging the public to call up and tell us their youth culture memories.

The phone number answers with an accessible and explanatory voicemail prompt explaining the sort of stories we want to hear. All oral histories are automatically sent to YOUTH CLUB via MP3 in an email.

At project completion, we have now made an agreement with Google Arts & Culture who will use their Google Speech API free of charge to transcribe all of the Oral Histories for the online Museum of Youth Culture. This work will be supported by our ongoing volunteer workforce beyond the scope of the project, helping shape the Museum of Youth Culture’s future strategy.
