Improved Online Museum of Youth Culture
Just as important as the project’s aquisition drive, is the future placement and storytelling of the materials. Since our move from an archive towards a Museum in 2015, we always say ‘the difference between an Archive and Museum, is the Archive holds the stories, but the Museum tells them’. This mantra has been key to our online development and as a result of this project we have developed a free and fully accessible Museum experience for the general public.

The new improved Online Museum of Youth Culture features;

- Featured articles reguarly updated with stories and new archive submissions
- Photographer collections showcasing our hero photographers and linking to their section in our new CMS
- Preservation projects showcasing our partner archives and linking to their section in our new CMS
- Integrated submission system with automatic upload to our CMS
- Oral History playback plugins
- Youth Culture Histories featuring essays comissioned by our previous Heritage Funded project
- An interactive timeline allowing visitors to travel through youth culture history and tailor content to their area of interest

- A Grown Up in Britain micro-site celebrating public submissions and including free download resources for at-home activities

In addition to the main site, we have developed a fully public facing micro-site specicially for this project, showcasing the incredible submissions and the work of our Outreach Champions in a digestible, curated format.

We found that one the biggest challanges when taking on new content is ensuring that the heritage is represented in a way that is accessible, relatable, and curated to prevent an overwhelming volume of materials. Using these principles we have developed an interactive storytelling project page celebrating the year’s acheivments and integrating external technologies to make that experience smoother including YouTube, Mixcloud, Spotify and Wordpress plugins.
