Partnership with Accumulate
Working with the homeless youth charity Accumulate, we conducted a series of 2
introduction workshops attended by 24 homeless participants. Due to COVID-19, original plans for the projects had to be restrategised towards online learning, and the result of the workshop demonstrates the strength of our ongoing partnership and ability to react with agility during uncertain times. Accumulate
went on to conduct x4 workshops with participants funded by the project and teaching them skills in oral
history recording and podcasting.
YOUTH CULTURE: YOUR VOICE launched online in September as a series of Homeless Radio podcasts developed with Accumulate participants. The podcasts incorporate oral histories recorded remotely by participants of their friends, family and themselves, looking at homelessness and how this impacts experiences of growing up and our sense of belonging.
Podcasts were then converted into video captioned formats for social media and are now publicly viewable on our website.
Quote from Marice Cumber, Director of Accumulate:
“Accumulate collaborated with MOYC to deliver 6 podcasts based on youth for their archives. The initial planning for this project started before lockdown but we had to pivot quickly to deliver the training online.

“Accumulate collaborated with MOYC to deliver 6 podcasts based on youth for their archives. The initial planning for this project started before lockdown but we had to pivot quickly to deliver the training online.
The challenge with this was reaching the Accumulate audience (people living in hostels or with experience of homelessness) through online Zoom sessions when digital literacy and poverty would be a barrier to engagement with this already "hard to reach" audience. An intense period of marketing was put in place and this project secured committed attendance from 8 people over the 6 weeks of training. Through this project they learnt about project planning, recording, podcast technical terms, researching and interviewing and, most importantly, increased their employability skills, communication, presentation and confidence. Due to the lockdown situation all interviews were conducted over Zoom and were edited afterwards for the MOYC archives, the participants produced material of quality that they were proud of. However, the biggest gain of this project was the meaningful engagement it gave to people who were especially vulnerable and isolated at this time. They had something to look forward to every week, were able to create, learnt new skills and became a supportive learning community together. All of this collectively improved their mental health and well being and increased their sense of self-worth and positivity.”
